McFarland, WI I rarely use the metronome for more than a few measures of a piece - just to discover what tempo is suggested at the beginning of a score by the editor or composer. With my students I occasionally use the metronome to help them establish a steady beat, but then I turn it off making them discover their internal metronome and the beauty of playing with the human spirit and not playing like a robot.
