Our post on what to expect when the California theme parks to reopen has all of those details. In the meantime, Universal Studios Hollywood reopened with rides, restaurants and most shows. All of the rides are open now, but some shows will open at a later date. Universal CityWalk has been open since summer , and the park is operating a little differently as it reopens, but every day we inch closer to the way things used to be.
The park is still encouraging all guests to keep a safe distance between their travel party and others when possible. Hand sanitizer is still available around the park. Masks are required for all guests indoors. Stay tuned as we learn more about new sanitation protocols, distanced characters and changes to dining. What rides and shows are open during the Universal Studios Hollywood reopening period?
Single Rider lines are back! So are pre-shows. There is no more distancing on rides which greatly shortens wait times. The following rides and shows are operational subject to change :. Most restaurant locations are open, but you may see more limited menus at this time. Of course, there is the new Minions Cafe to check out.
We hopped by for some cute snacks. You can find available restaurants on the Universal Studios Hollywood app. We noticed that the following restaurants are temporarily closed subject to change on what feels like a daily basis :. There are no more limits on party size or number of households.
Reservations are no longer required. Save more if you are a California resident! Even though the ticket booth is open, you'll want to purchase tickets online in advance to save money and time. Plus, at times, the park reaches capacity and tickets are unavailable for purchase at the ticket booths. Check with Universal FAQs before you visit for the latest information. Passholders can visit without making reservations.
You may resume regular use of your pass in accordance with its terms. You will receive a new printed pass upon entry to the park at the time of your first visit, which will include your new pass expiration date. Passholders may visit on any day the pass is valid i. You can check the park hours calendar online for the latest information. Universal Studios has expanded park hours.
The park opens at 9 a. The park opens the gates about 30 minutes early so you can enter and get to your must-do attractions first. Parking rates have changed. Parking generally opens an hour before park opening. When visiting, guests should review and comply with all travel requirements including state travel advisories and local travel advisories. New health measures in place during the Universal Studios Hollywood reopening include these are subject to change :. You may wonder how the indoor mask ordinance works for rides.
You'll see signage reminding guests of the rule inside and outside of the park. When you go to enter an indoor ride queue, a team member will remind you to wear a face covering indoors.
We did not have to wear masks on Jurassic World even though it does have an indoor portion. On the Studio Tour, we were asked to wear it whenever the tram entered a building.
At the DreamWorks Theatre, team members reminded guests to keep the face covering over the nose. We were all warned that if someone's mask slipped below the nose, team members would turn off their chair. You will wear the mask when you enter a shop or restaurant, but you can remove the mask when seated to eat.
During the Universal Studios Hollywood reopening, you can expect changes to the line system. The newest ride — The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash — initially offered a Virtual Line at times through the Universal Studios Hollywood app, or you could collect a physical ticket from a subway ticket machine — in theme with the surrounding city buildings.
On days when the wait is short, the Virtual Line is not activated. Even if the Virtual Line returns, you may still wait an hour to ride. You can still use Universal Express to skip the line. But then you'll skip part of the toadally adorable and immersive queue.
Most of the time, you'll encounter a standby queue. When you join a Virtual Line, you input your party size, so you only need one spot in line. We were able to join the Virtual Line in the app and at the machine at the same time.
They are not linked to your ticket. We liked having a physical ticket because when the ride broke down just as we were going to get in line, we could just bring it back later to get in. It was exciting to ride a new ride when Universal Studios Hollywood reopened. Lily was extra excited as this ride works for smaller tadpoles with its height requirement of 34 inches!
It's a slow and gentle ride, perfect for tadpoles. But the ride vehicle was a tight fight for Leap's long legs and frog belly. You are supposed to be a puppy in a box, but Leap's a big dog, I mean frog. Try the test seat out front to see if you fit. The new gift shop is toadally cute!
You can "adopt" a plush pet. Hop by to meet Captain Snowball. Look up to a balcony across from The Secret Life of Pets ride. You can chat with Captain Snowball. We talked about our pets and all our favorite carrot dishes. Lily had so much fun talking with him! Jurassic World — The Ride debuted a new ending too! That was toadally fun. You'll want to ride this one first thing in the morning, as the wait climbed to 90 minutes and stayed there all day on our visit.
The Lower Lot generally opens at posted park opening time. A New Restaurant. There's also a new restaurant in Super Silly Fun Land. The new and colorful Minion Cafe serves El Macho Nachos, various grilled cheese sandwiches, Gru's rotisserie chicken, Dispica-Bowl ramen, salad and adorable desserts. Satisfy your sweet tooth with a unicorn cupcake, a felonious float raspberry slush with banana frozen yogurt topped with whipped cream and banana candy , chocolate banana pudding with hazelnut spread, a Minion cookie and more!
Your favorite characters will still visit with you and entertain you. Honestly, it did not affect our visit to stay a safe distance from the characters. We were still pretty close and had many fun interactions with them, from Hello Kitty to Frankenstein. You can still chat, wave and take a socially distant picture, but you will not be getting that high five or hug for some time.
Blow kisses to Hello Kitty and have fun watching the mischievous Minions at play. We spotted the Simpsons and Scooby Doo with Shaggy too. Universal Studios Hollywood sells masks in case you want to get your Universal spirit on or are looking for a unique souvenir that will be useful for the next several months.
You can hop by CityWalk to purchase one outside of the park or find them at souvenir shops in the park. They have Wizarding World masks too! Remember, you'll need a mask to go indoors. The normal VIP experience has returned.

Advance bookings are subject to changes to operating days and capacity restrictions. Have a question? We met our guide, Kyle, and our group, and set off at 10am. We started with a quick tour of some of the sound stages, but we did not get to go in them We did get a tour of a back passageway were the producers and directors kept offices. We were offered the use of the restroom, but I didn't have to go.
I won't lie, the thought of getting to poo where the producers poo was enticing, but I didn't have to go. Then the tour took off. We started with the Hollywood Rip Rocket ride. The listed wait time was 65 minutes. Kyle lead us through a series of back entrances right to the roller coaster car. This was one of the rides where you could not bring anything and Kyle held all of our stuff.
We went from the street to being strapped into the ride in about 5 minutes. Kyle met us at the end and lead us through back entrances to the next attractions.
Our tour lasted from 10am to 6pm, with an hour break for lunch. We walked at a good pace, but with frequent stops where our guide would tell us interesting things about the park.
It was cool, not too geeky. We went on: Rip Rocket Ride Dr. And we saw a parade. Compared to the day before where we did 7 rides if you count the Cat in the Hat and the merry-go-round in about 7 hours, the VIP tour was worth it.
The behind the scenes bits were really worth it. After the Mummy ride we went underneath the tracks to see how it worked. Our guide had to talk around the cars buzzing by, about 2 feet above our heads, full of screaming people. We cut through the employee entrances and walked out into that control room. I got to pose with the aliens, sit at the agent's desks, and relax in the agent's lounge.
All while the people in the queue, waiting for the ride, looked on. And we got to skip the lines. I deal with people everyday at work, I don't want to do so when we go on vacation.
In the Men in Black ride a single rider was waiting for the next car and cut into our line--a word from our guide and they pulled him out. We got to cut in front of everybody. The tour was pretty much ours. Kyle, our tour guide, chatted with all of us before hand and got an idea where we wanted to go. He was going to skip Men in Black since it is an older ride, but I mentioned that I wanted to try it, so Kyle was going to take us to the Three Broomsticks in Hogsmeade for lunch. I mentioned we went there the day before and he changed the plans to the Leaky Caldron in Diagon Alley.
We were told we could ask to ride the same ride again if we wanted. Overall, it was great and very much worth it. I want to do the VIP tour again for Halloween: you get to do 4 haunted houses and two rides.
Another option is the private VIP tour. Tips for visiting Universal Studios. If you go to Universal, your going to have a lot of fun.
Rather than reiterate what everyone else said yes its great , I thought I'd focus on some tips and lessons learned to help make your trip more pleasurable. We spent the first day with no pass going on rides without lines. On Saturday, we used the pass and were on each ride within 10 minutes.
Its not worth it! Even though its unlimited food, every restaurant was fast-food type. The salad wasn't fresh. A meal only costs 10 bucks anyways and I was hard-pressed to eat two meals at those restaurants. Drinks aren't included either. I walked right on the Dragon Challenge, no wait! Xpress passes are not taken on Harry Potter rides 5 If you are going to eat in one of the restaurants in City Walk, make a free reservation early in the day at the booth outside of the restaurant.
You can easily walk to the park 1 mile. I'd recommend a 2 - 3 day visit. Journey 4 contributions. There's so many thrills and chills there. USF is so brash and exciting. They're not afraid to set everything around you on fire or blast you 0 to 40 in two seconds. I think that this is why it appeals to the teenage crowd. However, these aren't the same parks. One is based entirely on the movies, and one is based on a fictional world with several different themed lands.
So, because it's two parks, I'll review both of them. Universal Studios This was the original park, but it's grown a lot since its shaky opening over a decade ago. The park now includes amazing attractions. As soon as you walk in, you're met with several different things to do.
Everything seems so realistic. In the New York area, there are buildings everywhere and it appears as if you're walking on a street. In the Amity area, it seems as if you will be eaten by the big shark himself-Jaws. Here are some of the highlighted attractions: Men In Black: Alien Attack: This is an interactive ride in which people of all ages can team up in their own spinning cars and careen through New York streets.
Your job is to shoot all the aliens that you can find. Kids will like it too--the aliens aren't scary sort of cartoon-looking , and the spins aren't bad.
Revenge of the Mummy: This is the new attraction, so the lines are a bit long. You board a mine cart which travels through different scenes before racing through a high-speed indoor rollercoaster. Included among the madness is a launch uphill, a ceiling bursting into flames and plenty of thrilling drops.
Some say that this is a good enough reason to travel to Universal. The only thing that I can say is this: ignore the hype. Whatever you do, ignore the hype. If you do, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Jaws: The ride starts out as a nice tour through the Amity lagoon. Your skipper happily points out the landmarks and everything is going as planned.
Soon, a frightened call of a fellow skipper signals something much worse. The infamous shark has returned. You and your fellow boatriders are trapped in the murky depths as the animatronic bursts out of the water. The skipper tries desperately to kill it, using his grenade launcher. After a scary boat house and a wall of flames, the final showdown comes.
With a blast of fog and noise, Jaws attacks for its last time, just happening to eat an electrical line instead. Anyone want fried shark? There are many, many other attractions here including the E. Like I mentioned earlier, Universal has more in-your-face action but it also provides calmer things for the young ones. For example, there's Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast, which is still fun even if you're older then the targeted crowd. There's also a kid's play area and kiddie coaster.
Shrek 4-D is stunning. The effects are so crisp. You see Donky flailing his hooves at you as an evil dragon bellows fire in cool 3-D.
I think it's worth the visit. However, if you're traveling from afar, go to AAA travel agency and book a room at one of their hotels. It's definitely worth it. People complain of long lines, but if you stay on-site you get an Express Pass which allows you to bypass all those lines. Plus, you can walk to the parks or ride a river ferry. Islands of Adventure The adventure begins as soon as you walk under the infamous bridge and enter the Port of Entry.
This is only the first of the islands, and though it boasts no attractions, there are many secrets to be uncovered. The island is themed to be a bustling sea-side village where the adventurers gather before beginning their quest to all of the other lands.
Next up is Marvel SuperHero Island. As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with adrenaline-pumping comic book style music. There are large cut-outs of the characters in action, and they're extremely detailed and colorful. This island is home to the Incredible Hulk Rollercoaster. Instead of being a simple chainlift standup rollercoaster, you're blasted from 0 to 40 I think in two seconds uphill in an enclosed chainlift. Once you exit the Gamma Radiation tomb you do a complete inversion a feet in the air.
After this you plunge back to the earth before completing the rest of the twisted track. The beginning is worth the whole ride, in my opinion. Next to the Hulk is Spiderman. This is a must-see ride. It's a 3-D adventure in which your vehicle actually moves through sets, some of which are real and some of which are 3-D.
For example, you see the shadow of Spiderman before he leaps onto your car. When he does, the vehicle shakes slightly due to his weight. Sometimes you won't know if it's real or projected imagery. At one point, there's a simulated ft drop, where you almost crash into the cement before Spiderman spins a web to save you. There are other attractions, but I'll skip over them for now. The next stop is at Toon Lagoon. Several cartoons call this their home. You can join Dudley Do-Right as he sends you on the ultimate logride.
There are several small drops, but they're nothing compared to the huge one at the end. Some say its the steepest and fastest one around. In your puny log, you plunge down what seems like an infinite slope before crashing through a cartoon shack, through a bunny hill, and finally to a splash down. I'll skip the details on that, there is more to explore. The next island is Jurassic Park. If you've never heard of this phoenomanal movie, I don't know what you're doing reading this.
This island is surrounded with vegetation, electric fences for the dinosaurs , and small JP style huts. With a Discovery Center where you can watch a baby raptor hatch or participate in some small interactive games , a raft ride, and a play area complete with cool caves, Jurassic Park is definitely worth walking through.
