By Mods were no longer a cult group from Soho, it was a nationwide subculture. A relationship that has lasted the 60 year history. Throughout the Mod movement the main influencers have been Music and Fashion closely followed by smart haircuts - when the two go together a culture is created.
Each play an equally important role in what makes a Mod, a Mod. Mod life provided an opportunity to rebel against the older generation and lay down a newfound financial and creative independence based around music, fashion and amphetamines.
Although none of them realised it at the time, the young people of Leicester and Nottingham and their rebellion in lifestyle, music, fashion, politics and aspiration really did change not only their home town but, together with others of their generation, the wider world forever. The Mods, with their smart clothes and disposable income, were seen by many as the acceptable face of British youth. The media picked up on it and the creation of two warring factions was born — the Mods and the Rockers. Mods also rode European scooters like Lambrettas and Vespas and listened to a mix of Motown, ska and bands such as The Who. The Rockers favoured motorbikes and listened to American rock and roll such as Eddie Cochrane and Elvis.
